A Conroe man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Thursday for the aggravated assault of a Shenandoah police officer more than a year ago.

Joseph Charles Lynch, 30, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault of a public servant in October, but his trial was Jan. 18 in the 9th state District Court. He was sentenced by visiting Walker County Judge Jerry Sandel.

Lynch was accused of running over Shenandoah police Sgt. Raymond Shaw with a four-wheeler on Dec. 30, 2010. During the trial, Lynch admitted to being intoxicated at the time of the assault, said Assistant District Attorney Rob Freyer, who prosecuted the case.

Shaw assisted a Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputy and tried to stop Lynch and his female passenger in a wooded area near Texas 242 and Research Forest Drive, but Lynch ran him over after Shaw exited his vehicle to flag them down. Lynch then fled, Freyer said.
