Corpus Christi man pleads guilty to killing three women, gets life in prison

CORPUS CHRISTI — A Corpus Christi man pleaded guilty Thursday to killing three women and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Prosecutors chose not to seek the death penalty against Jacob Gonzalez, 22, because his low IQ potentially labeled him as mentally disabled, Nueces County District Attorney Mark Skurka said.
The U.S. Supreme Court barred such executions in 2002.
Gonzalez was deemed competent to stand trial, his attorney, Mark Woerner, said.
In May, Gonzalez shot and killed Vivianna Amaya, 18, with whom he and an on-and-off relationship, and two others in the car with him, Virginia "Gina" Rodela, 21, and Marisela Ybarra, 26.
