County domestic violence court showing success

Officials who work with a specialized misdemeanor domestic violence court docket in Montgomery County are ready to expand the program, which is already rapidly closing cases during its first four months.
The program’s success benefits victims of domestic violence, officials said, along with the county’s court system and defendants, with many going into programs that can help them end the behavior that got them arrested.
County commissioners on Monday approved a grant renewal submission to the Texas Governor’s Office of Criminal Justice to continue funding a domestic violence prosecutor for the specialized docket, held in County Court-at-Law 2 under Judge Claudia Laird. The $64,829 grant requires a $34,908 match by the county.
After the initial grant was approved last year, Laird’s court began hearing cases in October.
