Defense questions honesty of witness in Williamson capital murder trial

GEORGETOWN — A witness in the capital murder trial against Bobby Burks Jr. in Williamson County said Thursday that she lied several times when questioned by police but that she is telling the truth this time because "I know the victim's family needs closure and justice, too."

One of Burks' attorneys, Steve Brittain, said in court Thursday that Veronica Ortiz previously told police that she never saw her brother-in-law, Burks, holding a gun and then changed her story about the gun twice during her testimony this week.

"Yesterday you talked about seeing a gun that was silver and described it as having little barrels. ... Today you were telling the jury that you were not sure you got a good look at the gun," Brittain said. "What changed?"

"I just glanced at it," Ortiz replied.
