Defense witness: 'No one can say' woman's injuries were fatal

A defense witness in the intoxication manslaughter trial of Jenny Ybarra testified Thursday that it was impossible to know if the woman injured in the crash Ybarra caused was going to die with or without medical help.

Dr. Richard Senelick, a neurologist, said “no one can say” whether Erica Nicole Smith, 23, could have survived a massive head injury she sustained in December 2007, when Ybarra's car crashed nearly head-on into a vehicle she was riding in.

Smith was left for dead by arriving paramedics, who treated two other injured women in the vehicle before officials discovered she was still alive hours later.

“What's missing is care. We have this period of time where there was no care,” Senelick said.
