EL PASO- Victor Gomez is going to prison for 45 years. Last week he beat the double murder charge against him, but the same jury convicted Gomez of engaging in organized crime involving the deaths of two brothers outside a Socorro bar in 2009.
The jury took just under two hours to come back with the sentence.
Gomez was sentenced to 45 years for each of the two counts, but will serve them concurrently, meaning at the same time.
Defense attorney Joseph Vasquez says this punishment isn’t what the Gomez family was hoping for.
"They are upset. I mean obviously 45 years is a long time, and you know he is in shock. The family is in shock,” said Vasquez.
Before the jury began to deliberate, it heard closing arguments from both the defense and the prosecution which asked the jury for a maximum sentence.
