FORT WORTH _ A young Haltom City woman has been sentenced to seven years probation for failing to get immediate medical care for her baby, who was beaten to death last year by the child's father.
Ashley Nicole Massey, 21, entered a plea agreement with the prosecution on Thursday, avoiding jail time in the death of 2-month-old Elena Contreras.
The baby had at least six skull fractures, her liver was crushed, her kidneys and spleen shattered, and she had a severe brain injury with swelling and bleeding when she arrived at a Fort Worth hospital in August 2010, according to testimony in the case.
In June, a Tarrant County jury found Alfonso Contreras Jr., 21, guilty of capital murder for Elena's slaying and he was automatically sentenced to life in prison.
