Jury gives Benitez probation, fine

Prosecutor Pat Knauth says Jonathan Benitez got exactly what he wanted.

"What the defendant wanted was probation and we were unwilling to do that," said Knauth Tuesday afternoon after a jury ordered Benitez to serve 10 years supervised probation and pay a $10,000 fine. It was Judge John Stevens who used his authority to sentence an additional 180 days jail time which is the max Judge John Stevens could impose on the defendant.

Benitez was found guilty of manslaughter for causing the death of 16-year-old Mandy Le in May of last year.

Le was riding backseat in an SUV driven by Benitez when it jumped a curb, partially ejecting Le's body, before a utility pole guy-wire decapitated her.
