Life without parole is sentence for Barrientos

BROWNSVILLE — Standing calmly in the 445th state district courtroom, Marco Antonio Barrientos pleaded guilty Tuesday to capital murder in the violent death of a Harlingen woman.

Prosecutors say they believe he was the ringleader in the crime, which occurred in February 2009 and led to charges against three additional defendants.

Barrientos, 21, stood before state District Judge Rolando Olvera with a shaved head and a striped button-down shirt, and showed no emotion when Olvera sentenced him to life in prison without parole.

The mother of Rose Marie Gonzalez, 35, found her daughter dead, stuffed in her refrigerator, two days after she was beaten and strangled at her apartment in the Bonita Park Housing Project in Harlingen.
