The mother of a 3-year-old girl allegedly beaten so severely that the child suffered permanent brain damage and blindness testified Wednesday that she lied to authorities so that her boyfriend would not get arrested.
She admitted in court to telling authorities that Cody Lane Davis, 27, of Winnsboro, had not beaten the child. She says now that he was responsible for the beating.
Malesha Johnson, 22, denied causing the bruising and said that she “didn’t think Cody was capable of doing something like that.”
In her first statements to police, Ms. Johnson defended Davis but that stopped in later interviews. “I realized later that he was hurting my children,” she said in response to questioning from prosecutor Whitney Tharpe.
She continued her testimony in the second day of the trial of Davis. He is charged with one count of injury to a child, a first-degree felony that can bring either probation or a sentence of up to a life sentence if he is convicted.
