Trial begins for man accused of killing fiancee

LA MARQUE — Prosecutors said a defendant in a murder trial fatally shot his fiancee, but the defense claims the killing was an accident involving the mutual struggle over possession of a handgun.

Kenneth Joel Loftis, 26, was charged with murder and evidence tampering in the June 15, 2010, killing of Monique Powell, 26, in their La Marque apartment. Loftis pleaded not guilty in the case.

On Wednesday, Prosecutor Xochitl Vandiver-Gaskin told the jury of six men and six women that the couple had a tumultuous relationship, which led to police action.

“They would both get into it,” Vandiver-Gaskin said. “Both would hurt each other.”

The couple argued over money missing from a nightstand, Vandiver-Gaskin said.
