Colorado County Attorney Ken Sparks made a last-minute decision and declined to file for re-election. Jay Johannes, his long-time assistant, filed in his place. Johannes is unopposed in the Republican primary and will take office Jan. 1, 2013 since he does not have a Democratic opponent. Johannes said he was surprised that Sparks chose not to seek another term but was looking forward to serving as County Attorney.
Johannes, 45, is board certified in criminal law and has been an assistant County Attorney for over 11 years. Johannes and his wife, Caroline, a speech language pathologist for the Columbus ISD, have two children, Emma, 12, and Nate, 8, who attend Columbus ISD schools.
Johannes is chairman of the Columbus Community Hospital Board of Directors and serves as a volunteer firefighter for the Oakridge Volunteer Fire Department.
