A Rockdale man was sentenced to 75 years in prison following his conviction on drug charges in district court last week, according to District Attorney Kerry Spears.

Anthony Richards of Rockdale was charged with possession of a controlled substance one to four grams with intent to deliver - cocaine. He was arrested by Rockdale Police on April 15, 2007 for driving while license suspended. A search of his vehicle led to the discovery of a little over three grams of powder cocaine. The jury empaneled Tuesday reached the guilty verdict on Friday.

During the sentencing phase of the trial, evidence of a prior conviction for delivery of cocaine in 1995 as well as other convictions in 1995 and 2001 involving drugs, aggravated assault and criminal mischief were introduced to the jury.

During closing argument, Spears argued that drugs are not a victimless crime. “We are all victims of drug crime because it affects all of us in some way,” she said. “Whether it is a friend, neighbor or family member who becomes addicted or an addict breaking into our homes to get money for drugs.” She also stated that the police can do their part, the prosecutor can do her part, but now it was time for the jury to tell the defendant and the community “we are tired of drugs in our county.”

“We can combat drug dealing in Milam County one drug dealer at a time,” she concluded.

The jury sentenced Richards to 75 years in prison and assessed a $10,000 fine. He will be eligible for parole in about 15 years.

“I am very pleased with the verdict of the jury,” Spears said. “Police and prosecutors can only do so much. Juries are an integral part of the criminal justice system and today the people of Milam County through the members of the jury made their voices heard loud and clear.”
