When it comes to knowledge about the Texas Public Information Act, local public officials go to county attorney Ed Jones for advice.
Jones, who has worked as Angelina County's attorney since 1981, said working with open records and giving advice to others on the subject takes up about 3 to 5 percent of his time on the job.
Each elected official is his or her own public information officer, according to Jones, but sometimes questions arise as to whether or not a record is considered open to the public. It's often then that Jones will receive a phone call concerning the request, offering advice on open records law.
"I see my job here as if the law provides they should have access to those records then they should get those records, regardless of how it might reflect on anyone," Jones said.
