A Groves teen who gained international attention in 2006 when police tried to surgically remove a bullet from his head is slated to go to trial this week.

Joshua Adam Bush, 19, is charged with assaulting a witness, with the prosecution accusing him of shooting at a man who witnessed him robbing a Port Arthur car lot on July 21, 2006.

Jefferson County prosecutors believe the car lot's manager, competitive pistol shooter Alan Olive, fired back at Bush, lodging a 9 mm slug in the fatty tissue of Bush's forehead about two inches above his eyes.

Bush's case gained prominence when Port Arthur police obtained search warrants from state 252nd District Dourt Judge Layne Walker to remove the bullet against Bush's will.

If the bullet matched Olive's gun, police argued in search warrant affidavits, it would prove Bush was the man who shot at Olive.

Forced surgery was attempted at Beaumont's Christus St Elizabeth Hospital by Dr. David Parkus on Oct. 29, 2006. The procedure was abandoned after Parkus opened Bush's forehead and realized bone had begun to grow around the bullet, requiring a more extensive procedure than planned, according to a search warrant affidavit.
