HENDERSON, Texas -- A court date has been set for a man charged with capital murder in the 1983 deaths of five people abducted from a Kilgore restaurant.
Judge J. Clay Gossett said in court on Tuesday that trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 15 in the 85th District Court in Brazos County for Darnell Hartsfield.
Hartsfield is charged with the Sept. 23, 1983, murders of David Maxwell, 20; Mary Tyler, 37; Opie Ann Hughes, 39; Joey Johnson, 20; and Monte Landers, 19, who were found dead at a Kentucky Fried Chicken in Kilgore. All but Landers worked at the restaurant about 25 miles east of Tyler and 115 miles east of Dallas. Landers was a friend of Maxwell and Johnson and was visiting them as the restaurant was closing for the night.
