Arbitration eases consumer cases

EL PASO -- Local business owner Lisa Plummer has become a big believer in the Better Business Bureau's special binding arbitration program to help resolve disputes with contractors and other business owners.
Plummer, owner and president of swimming pool chemical and supply company D. Gilmore Distributing, had a dispute with a contractor earlier this year over a remodeling job for her East Side business's showroom. Through arbitration, she eventually got a $10,000 restitution award from the contractor.
The arbitration program, a joint partnership between the Better Business Bureau Paso Del Norte and the county attorney's office, was "very professional," Plummer said.
"I thought it was very fair," Plummer said. "They brought in another contractor who reviewed (the work that had been done) to substantiate both parties' claims, and then they came down with the judgment."
