Local man gets 198 years for sexual assault

PALESTINE — A 64-year-old Cayuga man was sentenced to a total of 198 years in prison Thursday afternoon after being found guilty of sexually assaulting his 5-year-old granddaughter at his residence last year over the Christmas holidays.
An Anderson County jury sentenced Charles Glendell Mewburn, 64, of Cayuga to a pair of "stacked" 99-year sentences Thursday afternoon after finding him guilty of two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child.
Anderson County District Attorney Doug Lowe said this week's trial represented the first time his office had tried a case under the relatively-new "Jessica's Law" which calls for a minimum prison sentence of 25 years in certain aggravated sexual assault cases.
