Brewer sentencing is ready to begin

Convicted killer faces death penalty

Jury selection began in Canyon on Monday for the long-awaited re-sentencing of convicted killer Brent Ray Brewer.

District Clerk Jo Carter said it may take about three weeks to whittle a pool of 197 potential jurors to a 12-member panel that will decide Brewer's fate. Prosecutors hope to begin examining witnesses around Aug. 10, said Randall County Criminal District Attorney James Farren, who is seeking the death penalty for Brewer a second time.

Brewer's guilt is not in dispute; instead, at issue is whether the 39-year-old will pay with his life for the April 26, 1990, slaying of Robert Laminack, 66.
