A Lufkin man pleaded guilty to aggravated assault last week after striking a 16-year-old girl with his boat on Lake Sam Rayburn in May 2007.
Charles Clayton Gilstrap, 26, was sentenced to 10 years confinement, but his sentence was probated over seven years, which means Gilstrap will not spend any time in prison. Gilstrap also agreed to pay a $1,000 fine and $25,000 restitution to the victim. Gilstrap offered "additional compensation" to the victim as part of the plea agreement, Assistant District Attorney Lee Westmoreland said.
Texas Parks and Wildlife officials arrested Gilstrap at the Shirley Creek Marina in Etoile shortly after he hit Ashton LaMar, 16, who was floating on an inner tube tethered to a boat. The accident severed LaMar's leg and caused other serious injuries, according to her family.
