Man sentenced in torture killing

The fourth of seven Texas Syndicate gang members convicted of torturing and killing Corey Baxter was sentenced Wednesday to 35 years in prison for his role in the March 2007 slaying that was captured on a cell phone camera.

The sentencing of Guadalupe Villarreal, 32, was finalized about 3:30 p.m. by Judge Maria Teresa Herr in the 186th District Court as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Villarreal's defense attorney, Loraine Efron, asked for a 20-year sentence, while urging Herr to consider that Villarreal was under the influence of methamphetamine and a mob mentality the night of the killing.

“He takes responsibility for his part,” Efron said. “But it was the action of many with the combination of meth and other drugs.”
