A Commerce teenager has been placed on probation after being found guilty in connection with a throat slashing incident from last summer.

Corey Dominic Heath, 18, was found guilty Wednesday evening by a jury in the 354th District Court of one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Thursday, the jury sentenced Heath to five years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice-Institutional Division, then probated the sentence for 10 years.

“This case was prosecuted before the jury during both guilt/innocence and sentencing without a plea recommendation from the state,” said Hunt County District Attorney Noble D. Walker Jr. “Obviously, the jury believed the evidence warranted the granting of probation and we certainly respect their decision.”

Walker praised the Commerce Police Department for their rapid apprehension of the defendant as well as his assistant Alton Estrada for his work in presenting the case to the jury.
