County's hot check division to upgrade system

Department has operated at loss for years

CORPUS CHRISTI — For years, Nueces County’s hot check division has operated at a loss, but officials are hoping a planned system upgrade will turn that around.

Since Dec. 31, the division, which falls under the District Attorney’s Office, has been closed. District Attorney Carlos Valdez said he closed it to await the software upgrade and make sure the process becomes more efficient.

The division offers local merchants a chance to recoup money from hot check writers. A notice is sent by the division warning the offenders to pay what they owe. Those who don’t pay risk the possibility of criminal charges.
