Judge found guilty of three corruption charges

EL PASO -- After 30 years as a successful defense lawyer, Manuel Barraza lasted only three months as a judge before his career disintegrated in scandal.

A jury of six women and six men today convicted Barraza of two counts of wire fraud and one charge of lying to a federal officer. They acquitted Barraza of one charge of mail fraud. Their deliberations lasted a bit more than five hours over two days.

Barraza, 54, was stoic as the verdicts were read. He chose not to testify during his two-week trial. Instead, his lawyers argued that zealous FBI agents had entrapped him.
