A Houston jury on Monday sentenced a Montrose man believed to be on his deathbed to 10 years in prison for murder.

David Earl Brown, who shot himself last week, was convicted Friday in the fatal shooting of Whitt Bruney on Jan. 2, 2008.

Brown's partner, Gene Eignus, testified Monday that he wants to move Brown within days to a hospice to die peacefully.

He cried on the witness stand as he said the man he has been with for 30 years remains in “very, very critical condition” on life support.

Eignus said Brown appeared to have put a gun in his mouth and shot himself. He said the bullet fragmented in the left temporal lobe of Brown's brain, rendering him unresponsive.
