Local prosecutors hit the streets

Police and prosecutors. Both are on the same team, so to speak, in the criminal justice system.

Assistant district and county attorneys, after all, prosecute cases based on complaints or reports filed by police officers.

An attorney thinks in terms of presenting a case to a judge and jury, having all the evidence and reports necessary for a successful prosecution and seeing to it that the Constitutional rights of the accused are protected.

A street cop often deals with crime in the very emotionally charged moments when it has just occurred, and thinks only about protecting the public — and whether or not probable cause exists for an arrest.

But less well known to the public is that while they’re on the same side, police and prosecutors often aren’t exactly peas in a pod. Sometimes, they don’t always understand one another that well.
