The cold-blooded killers who robbed a Galveston convenience store and killed a customer three years ago are still at large.

So is the rapist who killed a woman in 2007 in Crystal Beach. And the culprit who strangled a 42-year-old homeless man outside a strip center in South Houston.

The slayings are among hundreds in the greater Houston area and surrounding counties over the last six years that remain unsolved.

Some Houston-area communities are among 120 cities and counties across the state where 63 percent of murders or fewer are solved - falling short of the national average - according to a Houston Chronicle analysis of the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting database. The findings are based on cases reported by local agencies from 2004 through 2009.
