The mother of a homeless man described her son's troubled life Thursday in the trial of the man accused of fatally beating him in an abandoned downtown Bryan building.

Danny Ray Grammer, 24, could face up to 99 years in prison if he is convicted of murdering 20-year-old Dale Ellis. Prosecutors said he beat Ellis in the head with a steel pipe inside an old Laundromat.

Both Ellis and Grammer were homeless and have long histories of mental illness.

Ellis' mother, Connie Reynolds, said her son sustained brain damage at birth and suffered from attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, Asperger syndrome and bipolar disorder. He was a slow learner, she said, and had trouble taking care of himself.

She said she took care of Ellis until the fall of 2008, when she injured her leg, which required surgery, and lost the resources to support him.
