Stabbing results in life sentence

A man convicted of murder last week was sentenced to life in prison Monday for a parking lot scuffle two years ago that resulted in the stabbing death of an off-duty postal worker.
It took jurors about an hour to determine the sentence for Lawrence Adam Peña, 49, who was arrested in August 2008 after police said a Crime Stoppers tip connected him to the June 4, 2008, death of Evaristo Mena, 33.
The same jurors had returned a quick guilty verdict Friday.
After the sentence was announced, Peña turned around reluctantly to face dozens of Mena's family members who filled the 175th state district courtroom. He stared ahead as prosecutor Rita Spiegel read aloud a victim impact letter from Alicia Basaldua, one of Mena's nine siblings.
