FORT WORTH -- On Friday, Tarrant County prosecutor Bruce Fyfe knew that his five-year struggle with colon cancer was over.
"He said, 'I think this is it,'" said Mr. Fyfe's wife, Candace. "I got Jennifer on the phone, and he said goodbye to her. He called Riley and Sheila and Jim. Everybody dropped what they were doing, and they came over. Word traveled. All day, people came in and said their goodbyes."
Less than 24 hours later, early Saturday morning, Mr. Fyfe took his final breath. He was 40.
"He was an all-around good guy -- very committed to his work, very committed to his friends, a man of integrity," said state District Judge George Gallagher, whose court Mr. Fyfe worked in for years as a felony prosecutor. "He died way too young."
