A Fort Bend County grand jury sentenced Miguel Navarro, 18, of Katy to 99 years in prison for the murder of Matthew Haltom and 20 years for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against Joe Eodice.
The jury delivered the sentence Friday, one week Navarro was found guilty on both counts. Navarro was acquitted for an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge against Joel Arnold.
“We’re very pleased with the verdicts,” assistant district attorney Tyra McCollum said. “The Haltoms and other families are also pleased.”
Sentencing followed two days of testimony that brought Katy Junior High staff, psychologists, family members of the victim and defendant and no small amount of tears.
The last witness to take the stand was Navarro himself, and defense attorney Maggie Perez-Jaramillo talked the defendant through the events of that fateful night.
