GALVESTON —  A jury this morning convicted Joshua Royce Mauldin of injury to a child for burning his 2-month-old daughter in a microwave oven last year.

The jury also found that Mauldin used a deadly weapon -- the microwave oven -- in commission of the crime, a finding that can be used to increase his sentence.

Mauldin, 20, of Warren, Ark., was charged for burning his daughter, Anna Murphy, in a microwave oven for 10 seconds on May 10 last year in a Galveston motel.

The trial's punishment phase began immediately after the sentence was announced. Mauldin, whose attorneys contend that he was insane when he burned his daughter, could receive up to life in prison if found guilty of injury to a child.
