A jury on Monday convicted a mildly mentally retarded woman of murdering her boyfriend's toddler by holding him under a stream of scalding water until he drowned.

Veronica Herrera, 28, showed no emotion when the verdict was read. Jurors deliberated for about two hours before finding Herrera guilty of the June 2005 slaying.

Jurors reconvened in 227th District Court for the trial's punishment phase, which continues today. Herrera faces up to life in prison, but the defense wants the jury to consider probation.
