Washington says he's innocent, will fight shooting charge

Flanked by more than three dozen lawyers and supporters, former U.S. Rep. Craig Washington declared his innocence on the courthouse steps this morning.

"The system works," said Washington, who was indicted Thursday in connection with a New Year's Day shooting. "I'll have my day in court. We'll see that justice is done."

Quoting the adage that prosecutors could indict a ham sandwich, Washington said the indictment on a charge of aggravated assault is not evidence against him.

He also asserted that he will go to trial and said numerous lawyers, including former Gov. Mark White, had offered to defend him.
