Twenty-five years isn’t enough – not for the people
who have grieved for Jose “Joey” Luis Castillo Jr. since he was
murdered in 2006 at the age of 33.
Calvin Paul Carmona, one of
the men charged with Castillo’s murder, was scheduled to go to trial
this week, but instead pleaded guilty Friday and was sentenced to 25
years in prison.
The victim’s sister, 42-year-old Debra
Castillo-DeLeon, knew what punishment her brother’s killer would
receive when she arrived at the 263rd Harris County Criminal Court
Monday. She was there for a victim’s impact statement, which she read
from the pages of a letter to Carmona.
“I wanted him to know how we felt,” Castillo-DeLeon said.
