ANGLETON — “Ungodly” was the description offered by an investigator of the scene where the body of a Pearland flight attendant was uncovered, and defense attorneys tried to prevent prosecutors from putting pictures to that word.

Kenneth Cummings Jr. had been dead 11 days when his remains were exhumed at a San Antonio-area ranch owned by the grandfather of his accused killer, Terry Mark Mangum, prosecutors said. Cummings was buried on his back with knees bent and one protruding from the ground.

His torso remained covered with moist earth, and investigators later learned from a medical examiner some parts were missing.

Mangum, 27, of Cypress has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to charges he killed Cummings, 46, whom he met at a South Houston gay bar. Mangum, who faces life in prison if convicted of the murder charge, reportedly stabbed Cummings in the head in the older man’s Pearland home June 5, 2007, cleaned up the blood and drove to the ranch to bury the body.
