Katrina evacuee found guilty of killing friends

Chris Meadoux, the 17-year-old Hurricane Katrina evacuee accused of shooting and then slashing the throats of two friends in 2007, was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without parole Tuesday for the double slaying.

After deliberating for about 21/2 hours, a jury convicted Meadoux of capital murder in the Jan. 24, 2007, slayings of Johnny You, 17, and 19-year-old Luis Martinez. Both were found with their throats cut and gunshot wounds to their heads in a burning Northeast Side residence that prosecutors say Meadoux set ablaze after attacking the pair.

Firefighters discovered You and Martinez when they responded to the fire at the home, where a fourth friend lived and where the victims and Meadoux had spent the previous night. The two victims were found in an upstairs bedroom, where the door had been barricaded shut and the room set on fire.

“The facts in this case demanded this sort of verdict,” said Jill Mata, chief juvenile prosecutor.
