SEGUIN — A former Marion Police Department clerk who allegedly took thousands of dollars while she worked for the city has been sentenced to probation.

Esmeralda Gonzalez, 46, accepted responsibility and pleaded guilty in June to an allegation of theft by a public servant between $20,000 and $100,000.

Wednesday, 25th Judicial District Judge Dwight Peschel sentenced Gonzalez to 10 years of deferred adjudication probation.

Deferred adjudication is only available to defendants who have never previously been convicted of a crime and is intended to offer an offender a second chance.
