Jury selection begins in trial of man accused of execution-style killings of two brothers

Opening statements are scheduled to begin today in the capital murder trial of Victor Ignacio Gomez, one of four men charged with the execution-style killings of two brothers in 2009.

If convicted, Gomez, 31, faces life in prison without parole.

Gomez is accused in the June 22, 2009, murders of Jose and Jesus Vargas, ages 37 and 46 respectively, outside of the A&M Bar, 11638 Alameda in Socorro.

According to a complaint affidavit filed by El Paso County sheriff's investigators, Gomez and two other men, Joe Alarcon and Jose Guadalupe Cordero, allegedly punched and kicked the brothers during a fight outside the bar.
