Assistant City Attorney (Employment)

The Dallas City Attorney’s Office is seeking an energetic, self-motivated attorney to fill a full- time position in the Employment Section of the Litigation Division. Applicants must be currently licensed to practice law in the State of Texas and should have a minimum of 2-5 years of litigation experience. Employment litigation experience is preferred.

The position primarily involves defending and litigating employment cases based on Title VII, 42 U.S.C. § 1983 and other civil rights and employment statutes, representing city departments on a range of employment-related legal issues, and representing city departments in administrative hearings. In addition to conducting discovery, appearing in court, and trying and mediating cases, the position involves a heavy motion practice, which requires excellent research and writing skills. The position also involves providing legal advice and training in employment-related matters. This position requires an understanding of employment laws, trial experience, and strong skills in litigation, motion practice, negotiation, writing, and mediation process. The successful candidate will also be responsible for briefing and arguing, if necessary, employment litigation appeals in collaboration with the Appellate Section. The successful candidate will also be assigned to handle responses to discovery requests in civil and criminal cases to which the city is not a party. Other duties may be assigned.

Salary is commensurate with experience. The city’s comprehensive benefits package comes with the position. This position is exempt from the provisions applicable to civil service, pursuant to Chapter XVI, Section 9 of the Dallas City Charter.
