POSITION:    Assistant County Attorney – Appellate Attorney

SALARY:      $101,151.00

JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting directly to the Appellate Director, responsible for handling post-conviction litigation, including appeals, writs, expunctions, nondisclosures, and occupational driver’s license petitions. Completes legal research projects, legal briefs, and legal memoranda as assigned by senior leadership.  

General Duties:

Reviews, research, and prepares responses in appellate and writ litigation, ensures issues on appeal are appropriately and timely handled, and appears in local and appellate courts, as required

Responds to pre-trial and post-conviction writs of habeas corpus raised in adult misdemeanor and juvenile cases

Responds to petitions for expunction and nondisclosure pursuant to the Code of Criminal Procedure in all adult misdemeanor cases and represents the State at hearings

Responds to occupational driver’s license filings and represents the State at hearings

Performs legal research by reading statutes and codes, analytical books, and legal opinions, and legislative history utilizing Westlaw and specialized practice guides

Drafts and maintains responsibility for drafting legal documents such as legal memos, motions, pleadings, orders, plea paperwork, search warrants, and administrative documents and other instruments detailing and responding to legal issues

Discusses cases with prosecutors, defense attorneys, adult probation officers, victims and witnesses in an advisory capacity for review, questions, and advice

Communicates and updates the Criminal and Civil Appellate Director routinely on the status of all mentioned tasks

Exhibits higher-level thinking and problem solving by developing solutions to implement for the advancement of the office and community

Communicates with county personnel, elected officials, judges, defense attorneys, victims and witnesses of crime, law enforcement agencies, pro se defendants, and the general public

Attends all meetings and trainings, as required

Performs special duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

Doctor of Jurisprudence from an accredited law school and five (5) years of experience in a county or district attorney office, city attorney, or other governmental attorney with experience in areas related to the job duties; or six (6) years of appellate law experience as an attorney in relevant areas

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, LexisNexis, and Westlaw

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Mainly indoor activity.  Significant contact with the public, crime victims, witnesses, persons accused/convicted of crimes, police officers, and other law enforcement /courthouse personnel.

About This Office

Williamson County is a medium size office serving approximately 28 law enforcement agencies including the City of Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park and Georgetown. Health and retirement benefits provided through Williamson County. State Bar dues, CLE and membership in TDCAA for the selected candidate will be paid by the County Attorney’s Office.
