Assistant County Attorney – Labor & Employment (General Counsel)

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The Assistant County Attorney that serves in this position must possess good knowledge of:

  • Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act
  • Age Discrimination in Employment Act, Fair Labor Standards Act
  • Family Medical Leave Act

This position will be called upon from time to time ensure that Departments and Elected Officials follow applicable laws and best practices in all matters arising out of the employer-employee relationship, and to review and consult on proposed and adopted legislation affecting the client. A typical workweek may include attendance at one or more meetings, drafting and reviewing policies, providing legal guidance related to employee recruiting, discipline, and terminations as well as assisting with the review of monthly Human Resources & Risk Management newsletters.

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent research, writing, and drafting skills
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to communicate and work in a collaborative group
  • Proficiency with technology and legal tools such as Westlaw, Microsoft Word, Adobe, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of policy development and review for compliance with local, state, and federal law
  • Ability to perform thorough legal and factual analyses and exercise good judgment
  • Occasional ability to work extended hours to accommodate case load demands
  • Ability to comply with office policies and training requirements

Education & Experience

  • Active license to practice law in the State of Texas
  • At least five (5) years of experience practicing law
  • Experience drafting policies and other employment law
