The Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office is seeking a chief prosecutor to lead its Civil Rights Division, effective October 5, 2020. Applicants should be Texas licensed attorneys in good standing with at least 5 years of job-related experience, and should possess a thorough working knowledge of criminal prosecution and court procedure. The ideal candidate for this position has extensive felony trial experience.
The Civil Rights Division handles the investigations of peace officer involved shootings as well as investigations of peace officers who are alleged to have committed excessive use of force and other criminal offenses. Relevant charges may be filed in county and district courts. The Civil Rights Chief will appear at the scenes of officer involved shootings and will interact with the Texas Rangers and other law enforcement agencies. The Civil Rights Chief will present all officer involved shootings to the grand jury for consideration and will present other cases involving allegations of misconduct where the evidence meets the threshold of probable cause. Cases resulting in an indictment will be handled through the discovery, plea negotiation, and trial process. Strong case evaluation, writing, and communication skills will be required as well as proficiency to provide use of force education to grand jurors, law enforcement, and community members. Must be available 24-hours a day, 7 days a week to respond to scenes as needed. This position requires supervision of staff members and previous supervisory experience is desirable.
Fort Bend County is one of the most diverse counties in the nation and is only thirty minutes from downtown Houston. The annual salary for this position starts at $110,831.04. Bar dues and CLE are paid for by the office. Relevant Texas Board of Legal Specialization certifications allow for additional compensation of $5,000 annually.
