CPS Prosecutor

The Smith County District Attorney’s Office is seeking an experienced attorney for a CPS Prosecutor position. Responsibilities will include all aspects of CPS prosecution including attending regular court hearings, preparing and participating in trials and contested hearings, preparing orders and other legal documents including Rule 11 agreements, preparing discovery, attending mediations, meeting with witnesses/CPS workers, and other miscellaneous duties.

This position handles CPS cases from intake to final order including orders to aid in investigation and removals stemming from Family Based Safety Services up to and including emergency removals. The CPS Prosecutor will be working in a division that includes three legal assistants and three other prosecutors with a large and very active CPS unit located in Tyler, Texas.

Requirements:
Licensed to practice law in Texas in good standing.
Organized with the ability to manage a trial docket in multiple courtrooms.
Strong work ethic and commitment to ethical prosecution.
Preference for attorney to have courtroom experience.
Ability to work well with others to assist with negotiations and counseling CPS.
Ability to learn quickly and be able to do occasional legal research.

There are no appellate duties associated with this job. Smith County is a conservative community that values law enforcement and expects the equal application of the rule of law to everyone. The Smith County District Attorney’s Office prosecutors aggressively represent the victims and law enforcement and maintain the highest ethical standards. The salary range is $67,000.00 per year to $105,000 per year, depending on experience. Benefits include county retirement plan, healthcare, bar dues, and CLE.
