Summary:

Ellis County & District Attorney’s Office, which is located in Waxahachie, Texas, has an opening for an Investigator.  Investigators are responsible for the collection of factual information relating to criminal and civil matters. Additional duties include conducting criminal investigations for misdemeanor and felony crimes under the Texas Penal Code, locate and interviewing witnesses, transporting witnesses, obtaining and serving legal documents, provide security for witnesses and prosecutors, and assisting in the preparation of criminal, civil, juvenile and child protective services legal proceedings. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist prosecutors with case preparation for misdemeanor, felony, juvenile, child protective services, and civil trials
  • Conduct criminal history inquiries for defendants, witnesses, complaints, and additional investigative services requested by the prosecutor
  • Locate witnesses and complainants
  • Serve subpoenas for witnesses and records
  • Prepare and execute warrants, search warrants, writ of attachments, and court orders as required
  • Transport complainants and witnesses to and from court proceedings
  • Provide court security for prosecutors, complaints, witnesses for trial proceedings
  • Document investigative findings
  • Testify in court pertaining to investigative activities
  • Serve as liaisons for local, state, and federal law enforcements agencies
  • Interface with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies
  • Conduct surveillance
  • Collect and preserve evidence
  • Testify in court relating to fingerprint identification and comparison 
  • Obtain prior judgments and sentences of prior convictions
  • Perform all duties assigned by the Elected County & District Attorney

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • Meet all minimum requirements set forth by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLOE) and remain in good standing
  • High School Diploma and 60 semester hours from an accredited college/university or two years of active military experience preferred
  • Certified TCOLE Peace Officer with at least an Intermediate Peace Officer Certification and/or comparable Federal Agent experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Texas Penal Code and the Texas Code of Criminal Procedures
  • Comprehensive knowledge of criminal investigations (i.e., interviews, interrogation)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of search and seizure, arrest warrants, subpoena service
  • Fingerprint identification/comparison certification within one year of employment
  • Texas Criminal Information Center/National Criminal Information (TCIC/NCIC) certification within six months of employment
  • Current annual TCOLE Firearms certification
  • Current/valid driver’s license and insurance
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and in written form

Conditions of Employment:

  • May be required to work more than 40-hour work week
  • Successfully pass a thorough background investigation as required by TCOLE
  • Physical requirements include lifting/carrying up to 30 pounds
  • Physical demands include standing and sitting for extended time periods
  • Knowledge and application of appropriate physical force continuum and de-escalation techniques
  • Knowledge of office equipment (i.e., computer knowledge, copier, fax, scanner, word documents, adobe)
