Juvenile Legal Assistant

Responsible for comprehensive processing of assigned juvenile referrals made to the County Attorney’s Office from intake through disposition

Responsible for records management and filing, including e-filing, as required, and use of the office’s electronic case management system (Odyssey)

General Duties:

Processes juvenile referrals by recording into Excel, setting up case file into the Odyssey system, preparing charging instrument, requesting court and grand jury dates, service of summons and subpoenas and notifying Defense Attorneys and schools

Researches sex offender registration status, completing CJIS reporting information for each referral and calculating child support and restitution

Coordinates detention hearings by providing chamber file sheet to Clerks file and copies of dockets

Ensures transportation of physical files and office supplies are provided each week for court.

Prepares notices to schools and appointed Attorneys of appointments and settings and request psychological evaluations

Processes general juvenile related telephone calls and emails from probation, court, law enforcement agencies, parents, Attorneys and school officials

Scans and attaches all case documents into Odyssey once a case has been set up

Prepares legal discovery for defense attorneys, including paper and digital records

Maintains calendar and statistics of adjudication, disposition, etc.

Performs research for juvenile services

Performs collection processes for each probationer’s file by preparing / sending letters for fees owed and assisting with questions regarding such fees owed and letters

Readily complies with departmental and county-wide policies and procedures

Communicates frequently via telephone with victims following up on the status of their case and answers questions regarding the court setting, restitution issues, crime victim’s compensation and other general questions

Performs other duties as assigned

High school diploma or equivalent and combination of education and experience equivalent to six months of paralegal or related field.  Strong organizational skills and proven ability to maintain accurate and detailed records.  Able to work under pressure in a high volume office, produce accurate work and meet established deadlines.  Dependable, resourceful, and able to work independently and to maintain strict confidentiality.  Proven knowledge and experience with system software such as Oracle, Microsoft Excel, 10 key calculators by touch, fax and copy machines.  Ability to type and enter data with appropriate speed and efficiency.  Ability to work effectively with co-workers, employees and management in a pleasant, professional manner.  Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Mainly indoor activity.  Significant contact with the public, crime victims, witnesses, persons accused/convicted of crimes, police officers, and other law enforcement /courthouse personnel.
