TDCAA Staff Counsel & Director of Governmental Relations

Overview

The Texas District and County Attorneys Association (TDCAA) seeks to fill the position of Staff Counsel and Director of Governmental Relations. This position works primarily at TDCAA headquarters in Austin, Texas.

Essential duties and responsibilities of the position

  • Serve as a liaison for the association and its members with the state legislature, executive and judicial branch agencies, and other governmental and non-governmental organizations.
  • Monitor and report to TDCAA members on legislation and other emerging issues that may impact them.
  • Produce and present TDCAA Legislative Update materials for association members and other allied professionals.
  • Serve as legal counsel to the association and provide legal assistance to TDCAA’s service group.
  • Monitor, administer, and use the association’s website, social media accounts, and other means of communicating with association members and the general public.
  • Assist the executive director and other association staff with long-range planning, curriculum development, live and online training, and legal publications intended for use by TDCAA’s service group.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the executive director.

Requirements for the position

The requirements and qualifications listed below are necessary to perform this position’s duties and responsibilities successfully.

Required education and professional qualifications:

  • J.D. or equivalent degree from an accredited law school
  • Licensed to practice law by the State Bar of Texas

Preferred knowledge and experience:

  • Texas criminal law (preferably including work as a prosecutor in Texas)
  • The legislative process in Texas
  • Professional development presentations (preferably continuing legal education)

Other preferred skills:

  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate with association members, legislators, legislative and agency staff, journalists, and the general public in person and across multiple platforms.
  • An ability to maintain an attention to detail across simultaneous projects in a high-pressure environment under strict deadlines.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office products (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

Working conditions

This FLSA-exempt position requires 40 hours of work per week primarily from an office located in Austin, Texas. This position requires a significant amount of overtime work during and immediately after legislative sessions.

This position requires travel to board meetings, conferences, and other association-related events outside of Austin, so a valid driver’s license and a good driving record are also required.

Compensation

The starting salary for this position is $140,000–$154,000 commensurate with experience.
