Census of Prosecutor Offices (CPO, 2025)

Posted: November 4, 2026

The 2025 Census of Prosecutor Offices (CPO) conducted by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) and supported by the Urban Institute is now active.

The CPO aims to collect data on prosecutorial activities nationwide and administrative and legal issues facing prosecutors who handle felony cases in state courts. Data gathered will cover a variety of topics, including staffing, office expenditures, and caseload statistics.

To preview the CPO questionnaire, please see the PDF linked here. Each felony prosecutor’s office in Texas should have received via physical mail and email your office’s individualized PIN. You simply need to input the PIN into this survey link. If you have not received your PIN, please email CPO2025@urban.org for assistance.

We understand that you are frequently asked to participate in surveys and the burden of doing so is significant. However, the 2025 CPO is unique in that its questions were developed in consultation with prosecutors like you and it is conducted by BJS, the federal statistical agency responsible for collecting and reporting data on the criminal justice system.  Completing this survey can not only lift up the great work being done by prosecutors in Texas, but also help identify the challenges you face as you seek justice and serve your communities. Hopefully, new baseline data from prosecutors’ offices of all sizes from around the country, including yours, will better inform policymakers on resource gaps and the needs in the field to help you perform your roles more effectively.
