Free online training from the National Computer Forensics Institute

The National Computer Forensics Institute (NCFI) will be offering free on-line training for state and local prosecutors. The NCFI, operating since 2008, is a federally funded training facility located in Hoover, Alabama, and operated in a partnership between the Alabama District Attorneys and the United States Secret Service. The NCFI provides training in digital evidence/computer forensics to state and local prosecutors, judges, and law enforcement for the entire country and U.S. territories.

The normal training offerings for prosecutors are our Digital Evidence for Prosecutors (DEP) and Advanced Digital Evidence for Prosecutors (ADEP) classes. Both are a 5-day, in-person training in Alabama. However, during the COVID-19 travel restrictions we have had to cancel in-person trainings since March. Until we are able to return to classroom training, the NCFI will offer a series of 1-2 hour training blocks on a WebEx platform. Upcoming trainings include:

Leaving No Stone Unturned: A Comprehensive Approach to Investigations Involving Mobile Devices for Prosecutors: Today’s prosecutor must know digital evidence. In our hyper-connected culture, every criminal investigation and prosecution has a digital component. And the majority of that evidence is created by or stored on mobile devices. In this talk, we discuss the various mobile digital crime scenes and how to collect the data from each. We take you on a deep dive into the forensic examination of a mobile device, and explain the many reasons you may not get the evidence that you expect. We leave you with your very own forensic challenge, and the tools you need to understand mobile forensic examinations.

The live session will include:
·         Introduction to sources of mobile device evidence
·         Collection of mobile evidence from third parties, including location data
·         Understanding mobile device extractions
·         Virtual tour of a mobile device extraction
·         Why is my evidence missing?

The first offering will be Thursday, August 20 at 1:00 EST. The second will be Tuesday, September 1 at 2:00 EST. Chris Kelly, a longtime NCFI legal instructor, will instruct the training. Chris is the director of the Digital Evidence Laboratory of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office since 2008. He was an Assistant District Attorney in Suffolk County, Massachusetts from 2003-2008, and an Assistant Massachusetts Attorney General from 2008-2012.

The only way to participate in the training is to register with us and view the class live as it is offered via WebEx Training Center. Both sessions will be live, and will be the same content. Only register for one. Start times for the August 20 training will be 1:00 pm EST (12:00 CST, 11:00 MST, 10:00 PST, 9:00 AKST, 7:00 HST). Start times for the September 1training will be 2:00 pm EST (1:00, CST, 12:00 MST, 11:00 PST, 10:00 AKST, 8:00 HST). The class will last approximately 1h30m.

To register for the class you must be an active state or local prosecutor within the United States or U.S. Territories. We recommend joining the session 15 minutes prior to the start time. You will be unable to enter once the session if 10 minutes past the start time.

Encryption in Criminal Prosecutions for Prosecutors:  One of the most significant challenges to law enforcement investigations in 2020 is encryption. Critical evidence, including mobile device data and communications, is frequently encrypted with technologies that are free, easy to use, and activated by default. The debate over lawful access to encrypted data is a difficult one. As a result, law enforcement has and must continue to respond with legal and technical solutions requiring ingenuity.

The live session will include:
·         What is encryption
·         Challenges encryption poses to criminal investigations, prosecutors, and public safety
·         Legal and technical solutions for encrypted data on computers, mobile handsets and other devices
·         Fifth Amendment concerns with compelling passcodes.

This training will be offered Wednesday, September 9 at 1:00 EST. This topic was previously offered on June 25 and July 1.
