This position requires a thorough knowledge of criminal prosecution and court procedures. This position is responsible for handling misdemeanor cases from intake through trial in County Court and Justice of the Peace Courts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • All aspects of prosecution of misdemeanor offenses, including case screening, preparation and pleadings, motion, affidavits, probable cause statements, and other paperwork as necessary, witness preparation, securing and gathering of evidence, and representation of the State of Texas in pretrial proceedings, as well as in criminal bench trials and jury trials in County Courts and Justice of the Peace Courts
  • Formulation, justification and communication of plea offers in misdemeanor cases
  • Works with judges, court staff, law enforcement officers, defense attorneys, pro se defendants (when permissible by law), victims, witnesses and office staff in the preparation and prosecution of misdemeanor criminal cases
  • Performance of legal research necessary to effectively represent the State of Texas in misdemeanor criminal cases
  • Advising law enforcement agencies and officers on issues of criminal law and criminal procedure
  • Answering inquiries from the public and other governmental agencies regarding the duties of the Criminal District Attorney’s office
  • Other duties as assigned by the Criminal District Attorney

Minimum Qualifications, Education and Licenses

  • Must have a J.D. or equivalent degree from an accredited law school
  • Must be licensed with the State Bar of Texas

  • Knowledge of criminal prosecution, law enforcement and court procedures
  • Ability to prepare and analyze comprehensive legal documents
  • Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, county officials, the court system, and the general public
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex documents
  • Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • Ability to use a personal computer, including word processing, spreadsheet programs and data entry; calculator, telephone, copy machine and fax machine

Work is primarily done indoors in an environmentally controlled room, smoke free office.
